Restoring mangroves, one creek at a time

Community groups on the coast are replanting mangroves. Survival rates depend on choosing the right species for the right spot.

Mangroves protect shorelines, shelter young fish and store large amounts of carbon. Replanting them sounds simple, but many past efforts failed because seedlings were planted where they could not survive.

Groups that track survival over several years say the most important step happens before planting: understanding tides, sediment and why mangroves disappeared in the first place.
